Seems like that would guarantee at least one character in any given party would survive. By the time of AD&D, I had to set special rules to prevent ALL my players from being elves & half-elves, so by that time, M-Us would hardly be a significant threat on that basis. It seems there was a concious descision to remove humans & demihumans from the list of "bad guys".
